No one knows his exact flight story, not even his partner. Yet director Jonas Poher Rasmussen gets his school friend Amin to talk about the road he traveled from the Afghanistan of the eighties to today's Denmark. With the promise that he can remain completely anonymous.
Rasmussen ensures this by largely animating his moving story. In 2D animations he sketches Amin's journey through the no man's land between civilians and illegals, past corrupt cops and people smugglers.
But even more, Flee shows how a person is spiritually formed under these circumstances: hiding yourself doesn't stop once you have the right papers. Amin, a businessman and homosexual, was forced to construct a false identity, which he finally, slowly but surely, dares to discard, safely hidden behind animations.
